Immigration…Beyond Media Myths
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and undocumented immigrant JOSE ANTONIO VARGAS will speak (free and open to the public) in I.C.’s Emerson at 7:30pm THIS MONDAY Dec. 5. Topic: “Immigration…Beyond Media Myths.”
Vargas is the founder of DefineAmerican.com, a new campaign that seeks to elevate the conversation around “our broken immigration system.” In a celebrated New York Times Magazine essay in June, the 30-year-old journalist bravely described “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant.” The article sparked attacks on his character. Vargas was recently a senior contributing editor at Huffington Post, where he launched its Tech and College sections. Prior to that, he covered tech and video game culture, HIV/AIDS, and the 2008 presidential campaign for the Washington Post, and was part of the team that won a Pulitzer Prize for reporting on the 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech.
